Black Fungus Infection– Symptoms ,Treatment and Precaution

Black Fungus, also known as Mucormycosis,  is considered a very dangerous infection. Reports are to be believed that if it infects the eye, then the only solution is the removal of the eye by surgery . It can infect you after being discharged for several days after Corona from the hospital . The doctors are working very hard to minimize its effect as it is turning into a very severe epidemic .

Some of the states have declared it as an epidemic . Various kind of preventive measures are being advised by doctors to be safe from this disease . The black fungus virus is also known as  Rhino-Orbito-Cerebral Mucormicosis (ROCM).  This virus is mostly affecting the patients who have Corona therefore they need to take utmost care of themselves .The black fungus infection has caused a serious concern among the health department of our country as most of the patients affected from this disease are dying .Till now approx , 28,252 people have been infected from this disease .

Most Number of Cases 

Out of 28,252 Mucormycosis total cases, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said 86% of infections have a history of Covid-19 and 62.3% a history of diabetes . Two of the states have accounted for most of the black fungus cases in India . These two states are Maharashtra and Gujarat . Maharashtra has reported the maximum number of mucormycosis cases (6,339) followed by Gujarat (5,486), the Union Health Minister said after chairing the 28th meeting of the high-level Group of Ministers on coronavirus via video conferencing. If a person is cured from corona or is suffering from it , then also he can have the black fungus infection .

How Black fungus Spread 

The Black fungus virus does not spread from one human being to another through contact  but on the other hand it spreads through the fungal spores that are present in the environment or in the air .This virus spread in the Corona patients due to the misuse of the steroids and antibiotics (which impair our ability to fight these fungal infections) in COVID treatments .

Symptoms of Black fungus

The Indian Council of Medical Research has advised that not all cases of blocked nose should be considered as cases of bacterial sinusitis, particularly during/after the treatment of Covid-19 patients. One must seek medical help for detecting fungal infection .

Symptoms of rhinocerebral (sinus and brain) mucormycosis include:

  1. One-sided facial swelling
  2. Headache
  3. Nasal or sinus congestion
  4. Black lesions on nasal bridge or upper inside of mouth that quickly become more severe
  5. Fever

Symptoms of pulmonary (lung) mucormycosis include:

  1. Fever
  2. Cough
  3. Chest pain
  4. Shortness of breath

Precautions against Black fungus

The precautions are given below which can be adapted to avoid this virus are –

  1. Gargling and Mouthwash can be very preventive from  this disease .
  2. Use Pure water while giving oxygen to patients
  3. With the consultation of doctors the steroids should be used .
  4. Antifungal drugs should not be used without the consultation of doctors .
  5. The patients who are having diabetes are required to undergo periodic testing.

Black Fungus Treatment

The time is of very much importance in the case of the patients having black fungus disease . During the treatment from this virus judicious use of steroids (keeping blood sugar levels under control), antibiotics, and other antifungal drugs needs to be done . These infections are life threatening, and if not treated at right time most will not make it. The mortality ranges between 25 to 90%. If the infection spreads into the brain mortality is very high .
